Papers, 1832-1942.

Collection includes correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous family papers. Correspondence is mostly from family in Richmond, Indiana; Columbus, Ohio; Illinois; Kansas; Alabama; and health spas in North Carolina, Michigan, and Martinsville, Indiana. Topics include moving to Indiana and settling; family health and activities; the Civil War and Spanish American War; Republican politics in Henry County, Indiana; St. Louis, Missouri in 1904; and Smith's dry goods business. Smith's diaries (1855-1900) cover many topics, including weather, quotations and facts he found interesting, and local and national politics. Other items include Smith's personal accounts; Clarence Smith's address book; and order books from the C. E. White Grain and Coal Company. Correspondents include Smith's wife Catherine and children Clarence, J. Harry, Arthur, Lynn, and Mary Smith Heller; as well as Judge E. B. Martindale. Also included are two photographs of a young man and woman removed from an 1859 diary.

Born in Loudoun County, Virginia, Smith moved with his family to Richmond, Indiana in the mid-1850s. He entered the dry goods business then moved to New Castle, Indiana in 1856 where he eventually opened his own store. Smith married Catherine Taylor in 1861; they had five children.
